I’ve wanted to do this for quite some time. Originally I had planned to make this trip when I turned 60, but work got in the way, as well as completing my retirement home. I just retired in January and am now free at last to take this on. Originally I was thinking of doing a fully self-contained trip, but I did the Pittburgh PA to Washington DC trail with a fully loaded bike in 2017 and it was quite a challenge (check out my blog at acrosvezda.wordpress.com). Now I’m 8 years older and that much wiser- haha, I decided to go with the Adventure Cycling van-supported tour. A van will take all the camping gear and extra clothes and all I need to carry is what I will need for the day. I will be posting prior to the trip to get the hang of posting to this site and experiment with uploading photos, videos and such, but the real meat of this blog will start with the trip on 20 April. Not sure how often I will be able to post, I found the lack of internet during my Pittsburgh to DC trip prevented me from posting during that trip. So- I will upload as often as I can. I will also be posting to Instagram so you can catch me on Instagram (hillmwhetstone). You can also follow me on Strava (strava.app.link/xYfLDbP80Qb).
Check out my training page and my bike page. Appreciate any pointers from folks. Encouragement will be greatly appreciated during the trip!

Hi Mike, Pete Jennings. Dan Letson sent me the link to this page. I am really happy for you to get to do this ride, it is quite a blessing. I met Marv Steinman in Folsom, Ca. when he did his coast to coat ride – on a recumbent no less! I was a daily bike commuter at ILS you probably remember. But I have never gone more than one overnight. My record for a weekend was about 7000 feet of climbing. I was gearing up to cross the Sierras in a 2-day ride, but that never happened. Knee trouble cut my cycling career short, and now about 30 miles is my upper limit (for several years it was about zero). I am still at Aerojet, now L3Harris. But they moved me back to Virginia (Orange County) when they closed down Sacramento. Now I live by Quantico and commute to Orange, way too far to bike unfortunately. I’m really glad to hear how you are enjoying retirement! I will be crossing the Rockies with you in spirit!

Hi Pete- in Quantico- wow, you will have to come visit us in Williamsburg. I get back in July, send me your email and I’ll get in touch when I return. Trip is incredible. I love going East to West and seeing the transition just as the early settlers did. We are following the path of Lewis and Clark for a large part. We did the Katie trail in Missouri, following the Missouri River all through the state. and now in Montana we cross paths with Lewis and Clark again through the Bitterroot Mountains. I am reading a book on their expedition right now. I tell you, riding a bike 60 miles every day gets one in shape. I am in the best shape I have ever been in. Good to hear from you. Mike
